IBM 7171 protocol converters can be used for file transfer and even application specific graphics. File transfer. The two obvious choices are Columbia University Kermit protocols and Yale university protocols. Kermit from columbia univeristy is free, but not in the public domain. The CMS software and microcomputer software can be downloaded from a Kermit file server over bitnet. Micro OS's covered include MS-DOS Windows, Macintosh, Apple DOS 3.3, Apple ProDos, Comodore, Amiga .... Mainframes include IBM, VAX, UNIX ... MS-DOS software includes Tektronics 4012 emulation useful with SAS/GRAPH. Good full screen terminal emulation from most micro's. Yale Yterm is site liscenced software. There are good implementations for Macintosh, MS-DOS, IBM VM/CMS, VAX VMS ... The Mac version of Yterm is called "Tincan" and has nice convenience features including online keytable help. In our experience Kermit works on more machines, especially in the MS-DOS maze. Yterm is easier to use. Most user's with access to sync prefer async because it's faster and they don't have to wait for line turnaround.
