[net.micro] Modem Query

lrj@lasspvax.UUCP (Lewis R. Jansen) (01/04/86)

[ take THAT, line eater! ]

I am in the position where I am thinking of buying a 1200 bps (baud)
modem sometme in the next couple of months. It must be Bell 212A and
talk to the computer/terminal via a RS-232C port. Hayes compatibility
does not matter, as I will be writing my own terminal software.

I would appreciate comments, both good and bad, on the various modems
that are currently in the market. How well does it work? How sensitive
is it to noisy lines and/or poor signal levels? What sort of features
are there? What sort of known bugs exist?

As I am not terribly wealthy, I will be purchasing from the lower end
of the market, in the < $250 range. I would appreciate comments on the
other modems though.

Lastly, as I believe this discussion has already taken place on the
net, please MAIL the comments/responses to me at the below address(es).

By the way, whatever happened to Concord Technology Ltd.'s cheap
1200 bps modem? Anyone ever get one? Is it any good? I see their latest
ad in Byte (Jan '86, page 379) has the modem listed at $139, down from
$180 in the previous issue.

Thank you, and remember, MAIL responses to me, I am sure that the net has
heard enough of modems for a while.

Several months ago I bought an Anchor Automation 1200 baud modem and have
been fairly happy with it so far.... but I'm easy to please.

I'd recommend you look for missing "features" in your cheaper modems.
The one I bought doesn't support the "break" function. This wasn't important
to me.
