Greetings, We currently have a MicroVax II (running MicroVMS 4.5, with an Excelan card, running the EXOS TCP/IP software) and an IBM mainframe (an IBM 4381, running VM/HPO 5.0, CMS, MVS/SP and the IBM TCP/IP FAL code). Our Unix machines communicate with the IBM on our LAN ethernet via the tn3270 program, which permits a full-screen, full duplex connection, emulating an IBM 3270 terminal. Is there such an animal for VMS systems? I'm interested in both public domain programs, and commercial products. Thanks very much. -- Joe DeBattista UCSF Computer Center BITNET: jd9014@ucsfcca DOMAIN: jd9014@cca.ucsf.edu

Joe, Welcome to the world of 'good product, no support'. Basically, the story is as follows: -> since there is no standard socket library for VMS, tn3270 and its clones has to be adapted separately to each VMS TCP/IP implementation. -> Excelan has claimed that they were going to do this, but has been silent on the subject for at least 18 months. They have also claimed that they were going to support a U**X-like socket library, but that is making equal progress. I presume they will actually do these things right after they start supporting domain name resolution, straighten out their routing mechanisms, stop going into mail loops whenever they get header fields they don't like, send out proper mail error messages to the right places, etc., etc. In other words, don't hold your breath. -> We've started to convert a 3270 emulator to run with Excelan's Telnet on several occasions, but have gotten sidetracked with more critical tasks. We also got hold of a socket library produced by a private company, but it doesn't quite work and we promised to not give it out, or to give out the name of the source, so it won't do you much good. I can give you our notes and (extremely limited) pre-library partial work if you would like to have a go at it. Good luck.
