[comp.protocols.ibm] 3174-11L Token Ring Gateway Problem Resolved

NU021172@NDSUVM1.BITNET (Marty Hoag) (10/03/89)

In response to my query here or on the VMSHARE conference I
received a note from a person at the University of Toledo saying
that he had the same problem and got a zap to fix it from IBM Level 2.
He indicated there was some reluctance to apar the problem... His
incident was closed on 9/27/89.

The zap U of Toledo got was to ISTTSCUF with UV38648 on worked here
too! IBM Level 2 called after we had tested it (I was only at Sev 2)
and said they were about to give me the same zap. They promised me to
APAR the problem internally. Since VTAM 3.1.0 is current only through
the end of October the timing is important. Maybe they didn't realize
how many of us laggards there are... ;-)

One other tidbit we ran into. The 3174-11L Token Ring 16Mbps
adapter card (9351) has a ground lug for the shield of the patch
cable. We found that some cables we bought from a third party, while
having the shield and a place to attach the shield to the ground lug,
did not work (symptom was 0880 errors and the adapter wouldn't open).
This happened on two different 3rd party cables.

Using the supplied short cable connected to a patch cable worked.
The same third party cables worked ok on other devices and some of the
TRN adapters (like the 3174-03R/9350) don't even have the grounding
connection. This is our first token ring network so the answer to
this may be obvious to others... But it may be wise to stick with
the trn cable that comes with the 11L (or 9351) and just extend it
with a patch cable if necessary... ;-)
