----- News saved at 29 Sep 89 19:01:59 GMT Can anyone point me to a source for detailed descriptions of SNA (and other) IBM protocols? I'm looking for descriptions containing a sufficient level of detail that a developer could design protocol handlers from them. I need information like message formats, state transition diagrams, etc. Thanx in advance.

Someone asked for detailed descriptions of SNA and other IBM protocols. You will have alot of problems finding such information since IBM considers it to confidential. I know this since I was looking for manuals about RSCS protocols last year, and I worked for IBM over the summer. They are very protective of their technology. -Bob

Bob, It's not really true that IBM doesn't publish protocol information, although sometimes not officially defining the publication as the final authority. Some examples: For SNA: Systems Network Architecture Format and Protocol Reference Manual: Architectural Logic, IBM form number SC30-3112. Systems Network Architecture Format and Protocol Reference Manual: Architecture Logic for LU Type 6.2, IBM form number SC30-3269. Systems Network Architecture Format and Protocol Reference Manual: Distribution Services, IBM form number SC30-3098. For NJE (RSCS, JES, and HASP): Network Job Entry Formats and Protocols for System/370 Program Products, IBM form number GG22-9373. Beware, however, that these manuals add up to well over a thousand pages. Lee Varian
