[comp.protocols.ibm] LU type 0

hue@hpindda.HP.COM (Hue Vu) (01/17/90)

I would like to know more about IBM's implementation of LU type 0. Following
are several questions about it:

1) What is LU type 0 liked?
2) Does IBM have any document describe the protocol of LU 0?
3) Which IBM's system support LU 0?
4) What type of application is using LU 0?

Thank you in advance for your response.

From an SNA perspective, there isn't an "LU Type 0" protocol. Or, to put
it another way, an LU-0 session doesn't have any architected rules: it
is more-or-less outside of the realm of SNA, and any rules are strictly
by agreement between the two communicating LUs. There are potentially
an infinite number of "LU-0" protocols...

There *are* a couple of commonly-used protocols that fall in the LU-0
category: BiSync 3270s; and SLU-P. I don't have a reference handy for
the BiSync 3270 protocols; I believe that SLU-P is described in the IMS
communications manual, probably in the ACP/TPF manuals, and probably also
in the manuals that describe IBM's financial clusters (the 3600 and 4700
series machines). I don't think that the IBM manuals actually use the
name "SLU-P" (which means "Secondary LU -- Programmable"), but this is
the term that is used in the financial community.

IBM has an application called HCF (Host Command Facility) that is based upon theLU0 protocols. This application is used to allow IBM 3270 to connect to remote
systems (AS400, S/3x, ...) that support the partner DHCF (Distributed HCF). At
HP, we have a product, SNA DHCF/XL, that allows IBM 3270 displays to connect to HP3000 (XL only). This product requires HCF be running on the IBM host. If youneed more information on HCF's implementation on the LU 0 protocols, manuals
are available.

Hope this helps,
