[comp.protocols.ibm] IBM 5250 support on TCP/IP

I want to connect a TCP/IP workstation and 5250-based applications
on an AS/400. 5250 is the default or native data stream supported
on the IBM AS/400 and the IBM S/3x (as opposed to the 3270 data
stream used for MVS and VM systems). The workstation is on Ethernet
and runs HP-UX, which is compatible with UNIX System 5.2 and BSD 4.2.
The AS/400 is on a Token Ring and I know how to bridge the Token Ring
to the Ethernet.

Based on what I've learned so far, one of the following might work
if I can find the necessary components:

	1) "TN 5250" extensions to Telnet. I know that RFC 1041
defines a Telnet 3270 Regime Option which supports the
3270 data stream within the Telnet protocol. I've not
been able to find a similar regime option for the 5250
protocol stream. I also understand that IBM does not
presently include Telnet as part of its TCP/IP support
on the AS/400, but that they have made a Statement of
	   Direction for it.

	2) An X-Windows 5250 emulation package for the workstation
which can talk directly to the AS/400 or go through an
	   intermediary system. I'd prefer a full-blown X application,
	   but I'd consider a character-based application accessed
	   by something like xterm.

	3) Support of APPC/LU6.2 on HP-UX over the workstation's
Ethernet interface. Ideally this would include support
for the 5250 data stream under LU6.2, but I'd be happy
just to find a vendor that provides the LU6.2 support.

Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't regularly subscribe to this newsgroup, so I'd appreciate
