California State University, Hayward has an opening for a VM expert to serve as consultant to faculty users in a VM/CMS environment. The duties include: advising and assisting faculty using the VM operating system and applications (faculty will pose such questions as "what is available to do time series analysis?"; "would you load this software I acquired for use in my class?"; "how do I use indexed files in Cobol under VM?"); assist in planning and designing new systems (we are continually adding to our system, expanding its network access, buying software- you will be the primary input to the Director of Academic Computing regarding the feasibility and planning of upgrades and expansions); identifying potential problem areas and recommending solutions (we try to be proactive and keep ahead of problem areas before they impact the faculty); write user documentation (we produce a VM handbook for faculty and students, as well as articles for our newsletter); develop and conduct one-on-one and classroom training for faculty (most of our faculty training is one-on-one, but there are special cases were we teach a formal workshop for faculty and others). The position requires a thorough understanding of VM/CMS, its utilities and language processors (this includes not only how the system works, but also how it needs to function in an academic environment) knowledge of procedures for installing third party applications software (eg, SPSS); experience in end user support; training experience; ability to articulate information to users of varying skill or knowledge levels; execllent writing skills; and the ability to take the initiative in finding solutions to the problems presented by an academic environment. This is a fairly typical "user services consultant" type of position at a medium-sized university. The position is one of three consultants in the Academic Computing Support group. In addition to the VM environment, we support Macs, PCs, a Unix miniand an ethernet backbone. The position reports to the Director of Academic Computing. It is a full time, permanent position, 40 hours a week, 12 months a year. The state classifcation is ICC II and has a salary range of $2921-$3520 per month.
