[comp.protocols.ibm] TELNET and FTP

KLENSIN@INFOODS.MIT.EDU (John C Klensin) (11/05/90)

Mike,
As I understand it, the TCP/IP implementation for VM/CMS is a
separately-priced and purchased product. If one buys and installs the
product, then TELNET and FTP become "regular CMS commands". If not,
they are not only hidden, they are not there anywhere.

Yes. The product number is 5798-FAL, however on 12/28/90 version 2 of
TCP/IP for VM will be shipping. The product number for V2 is 5735-FAL.

FAL includes FTP, TELNET, SMTP, NFS and remote execution. I have found
that V1 is a little buggy. Try to FTP with a SFS directory accessed as
your A-Disk! During the last SHARE in New Orleans IBM had a presentation
on TCP/IP and outlined some of the new features in V2. Things like an
almost complete Scoket library, performance information and improvements.

As for the commands being hidden, well that is up to the SysProg that
installed it. The default placement of the commands is on TCPMAINT's 592
disk. Your SysProg may have placed the public files on the Y-Disk.

I don't represent Amdahl, I just work here.
