[comp.protocols.ibm] Alternatives to multi-drop analog leased lines?

ac220@CLEVELAND.FREENET.EDU (Richard Szabo) (11/26/90)

I would like your opinion on alternatives to our network configuration:

My shop runs a data network over 25 multi-drop 4-wire analog leased
lines to 80 bank branch locations geographically sprinkled over half
of our state, Ohio. We run NCP in a 3705. The lines run SDLC or
BSC and carry sporadic CICS 3270 terminal traffic. There are 4800- and
9600-bps circuits. The lines are utilized only about 10 hours
per day. $$$ They cost a lot. $$$

We are studying X.25 for this. Any problems/gotchas here? Security?
Performance?

What about a T1 "ring"? Or dial-up lines which are bridged to create
multi-drop emulation? ISDN? Virtual Private Data Network?

Have you done it? If so I'd love to hear from you. If not, please
respond with any ideas, no matter how off the wall you think they might
be, to the list or by e-mail if you prefer, or phone (I'll return your
call on our dime).
