Has anyone heard of a method to support NJE over a TCP/IP connection between a 3090 running MVS and Unix workstations? We would like to make our 3090 more accessable to our faculty and students who are not on our VM/CMS system. Is this possible? If such a thing were to become available, how many of you would be interested in using it? As an aside, we are also interested in supporting this from DOS and Mac based machines. I would appreciate hearing your ideas and suggestions about this. If there is enough interest, I will post a summary of what I find out. -- Rick Wiggins The University of Akron RickWiggins@UAkron.Edu Computer Center, Room 144E (216) 972-7183 Akron, Ohio 44325-3501 The ZIPnet Network Information Center can be reached at: NIC@UAkron.Edu

I was informed that SunMicro has such a product, but it's expensive. Of course, it runs on their machines. They also have a 'Sunlink' LU-2 emulator which I've personally used and like, barring the single file at a time ftp. J Beard, jeffb@sharebase.com

If the MVS system runs as a guest under VM, I believe the University of Florida people have used the Princeton VMNET code and the VMNET support present in PSU's 'urep' package to connect the two setups. It involves a PROP DVM on the VM side that's set up as the SECUSER for the MVS machine to issue the JES2/3 commands to start the link when it sees the VCTC come ready from VMNET. You may also want to investigate the Apollo-derived NCS (Network Computing System) stuff in MVS TCP v2 (not yet out, but Real Soon Now according to IBM). NCS is a pretty nifty way to put real horsepower in the hands of workstation users in a fairly transparent fashion. >aside, we are also interested in supporting this from DOS and Mac based >machines. I'm not sure how NJE connectivity for micros would really work -- could you speculate a bit more? What's the percieved advantage? >RickWiggins@UAkron.Edu Computer Center, Room 144E >(216) 972-7183 Akron, Ohio 44325-3501 -- David Boyes |The three most dangerous things in the world: dboyes@rice.edu | 1) a programmer with a soldering iron, | 2) a hardware type with a program patch, and "Delays, delays!" | 3) a user with an idea.
