[comp.hypercube] ICPP Sponsorship?

trimble@leadsv.UUCP (09/25/87)

In going over my proceeding from the 1987 International Conference on
Parallel Processing, I realized that the (typical) IEEE Computer
Society and Association for Computing Machinery logos were not
present on the cover. Expecting a printing oversight, I more closely
examined the Proceedings and then the Advance Program and other
material distributed with no indication as to IEEE or ACM
sponsorship.

Does anyone know if the ICPP is still sponsored by IEEE or ACM? If
these two (prestigious) organizations don't support this conference,
what do they offer as a replacement forum? Penn State should be
applauded for their ong~Ying {_and overt sponsorship. Hopefully, this
isn't some reduction of interest by ACM or IEE in the parallel
processing field.

Anyone know about this? Let hear about it!

I inquired about this at ICPP, and was told that Tse-yun Feng
"owns" the conference. He has been General Chairman, at least
since 1976 (the earliest proceedings I have), and apparently
since 1972, the first Conference on Parallel Processing. Through
1986, ICPP has been co-sponsored by a University and IEEE
Computer Society, in cooperation with ACM, and published by IEEE
Press. From 1976 (or earlier) to 1979, ICPP was co-sponsored by
Wayne State University. From 1980 until at least 1982, it was
co-sponsored by Ohio State University (I don't have 1983 or 1984
proceedings). Since at least 1985 (possibly 1983 or 1984), ICPP
has been co-sponsored by Penn State. This movement of
co-sponsorship has apparently tracked Dr. Feng's appointments at
these universities. In 1987, IEEE Computer Society and ACM were
dropped from sponsorship. While Feng has certainly done the
parallel processing community a great service by keeping the
conference going for many years, I think loss of co-sponsorship
by the two major computer science societies is a shame.
