allbery@ncoast.UUCP (Brandon S. Allbery) (07/26/87)
Well, the (as yet still incomplete) posting of MicroEmacs has pointed up some major problems with my remaining moderator of comp.binaries.ibm.pc. (When I created the group, I warned everyone that I probably couldn't remain moderator....) - Insufficient time. I can't process something huge like the 5+2+6=13 part MicroEmacs in anything like a reasonable time. - Insufficient machine resources. Ncoast is straining, and has filled the root and news partitions innumerable times. We can't handle the load any more. - UUCP problems: our news has to go out via hal, but for some reason many uuencoded files cause hal to choke. Looks like a uucp incompatibility of some kind. Sigh. I'm still trying to get part 5 of the binaries and part 1 of the sources out. - No archiving -- this one is basically the same as #2 above, but on the /u partition (which is also out of space...). So -- I'm going to have to bow out as moderator. Since I can't seem to get any reponse from spaf@gatech as to whether my unorthodox creation of this group is either going to be made official or officially rejected, I'll make the group UNmoderated and flush the rest of the stuff in my mailbox as fast as possible. However, thought should be given to the possibility of another moderator being chosen instead. Especially if it's mail problems that have prevented me from talking to Spaf about it (likely, N.E. Ohio net topology changes 7 times between waking up and making coffee ;-) -- another reason for me to leave the comp.binaries.ibm.pc moderation business.) [For those interested, sources.misc is NOT affected by this; I have arranged for this stuff to go out via necntc in Massachusetts, something I can't do with the binaries.] "This is neither a joke nor a drill, it's the real thing." I will wait for one (1) month, and then act based on what happens in the interim. Start preparing for the change now. If I continue at this, comp.binaries.ibm.pc will NOT benefit; so, in the interest of letting this group prosper under better moderation/non-moderation/whatever, I'm bowing out. ++Brandon -- Brandon S.
