OKI has what looks to be a really good introductory offer on their new Single Inline Memory Module products. These are 8 or 9 surface mount 256K DRAM chips (41256's) bonded to a PC board (with decoupling capaitors), with all of the traces running to fingers on one edge. These modules plug vertically in to special low profile sockets. All in all, makes for pretty high density packaging - a lot of memory in not much board space. (This isn't a new idea, and must be similar to the way Apple is putting memory in the MacPlus, though I doubt it's identical). Anyway, until March 31, you can get "OKI DRAM SIMM Sample Sets": two 256Kx9 modules and a double socket (that's 512K x 9) for $48 ($44 plus $4 s/h). Up to three sets per customer. Check or MO, no PO's. From: Customer Service, OKI Semiconductor 650 N. Mary Ave. Sunnyvale, CA, 94086 408-720-1900 This looks like a good deal - it's about the same price that you could get DIP 41256's for right now, and you don't need sockets or caps. I'm going to buy a couple to play with (soon as I get paid!). have fun! -m- Mike Blackwell, The Robotics Institute, CMU, 412-268-8830
