[comp.binaries.ibm.pc] Recent posting of enhanced DRAIN "utility" in comp.binaries.ibm.pc

jay@splut.UUCP (Jay Maynard) (04/02/88)

A couple of days ago, I posted an enhanced version of the ever-popular
DRAIN "utility" to comp.binaries.ibm.pc. I have since gotten several
mail messages complaining that they didn't know what it did.

It's a piece of jokeware. No, it's NOT a Trojan, or anything malicious.
I even included the C source code (Turbo C v1.0) for
education/enhancement and so those who don't trust software they didn't
compile themselves could compile it themselves.

My mistake was in assuming that the original program had been widely
spread around and was well-known. I see now that that was an error.

If you'd rather be surprised when you run it (really...it's harmless),
then hit 'n' now. Spoiler ahead.

The program clears the screen and puts up a DOS prompt, honoring the
user's PROMPT specification if one has been given. (This is the
improvement over the previous version - it simply put up a yellow,
highlighted A>, which very few people actually used as their prompt.)
After any key is struck, it then simulates (by messages and noises)
draining water from the drive. Afterwards, the program exits, having
done nothing to the system except entertained/scared (possibly) the
user. It's intended to be something you run on someone else's machine
and walk off, watching from a safe distance (or close range, if you can
keep a straight face).
