[net.micro] Sun-3: 15 or 16.67 MHz?

matt@srs.UUCP (01/31/86)

Every reference I have seen on the Sun-3 in USENET has stated (assumed?)
that the 68020 runs at 16.67 MHz. We have recently received some
literature from Sun on the Sun-3 and it states that the clock rate
is 15 MHz? Why is everyone saying 16.67?

The Sun-3 architecture does not specify a clock speed.
The Sun-3/75, 160, and 180 run at 16.67 MHz.
The Sun-3/50 and /52 run at 15 MHz.

The /50 is the cheap machine and people felt that the price
reduction was worth the performance loss. Given that a /50 is
$7900 while a similar /75 runs $15900 I think they were right.

Simple, there is more than one Sun-3. The Sun-3 is an entire family
of machines. The Sun-3/75 and Sun-3/160 models use the same cpu
board, which has a 16.67 MHz clock. The new Sun-3/50 is a different
cpu board that uses a 15 MHz clock.

The recently announced Sun 3/50 and 3/52 are 15MHz clock
systems. The other Sun 3 systems are 16.67 MHz systems.
Since these are new, the previous postings refer to the
16.67 systems.

I may have the model numbers wrong because my Sun folder
is in my office but this should help clear up the confusion.
