[net.micro] PC Limited AT clone

posdamer@wudma.UUCP (Jeff Posdamer) (02/07/86)

We are about to purchase some AT (clone) equipment for our PC lab.
At this point the PC Limited AT clone looks extremely appealing. The
review in PC Magazine,2/25/86 of AT clones seems to support this
notion. I am seeking people with experience with this machine to tell
me about their experiences. I am aware that there were some orgaisational
problems a while ago due to the response to the intitial offering.
I am much more concerned with reliability, maintainability, compatability
and horror stories (or the lack thereof. Please respond by mail. I will
summarise my responses (if any) to the net.

Will somebody, somehow, somewhere please post something about this machine?
The price is so appealing that I am suspicious.

It would be also be great to reduce (maybe) the number of requests for
information for this machine. I am sure that once somebody posts a review
of PC Limited's AT Clone that all requests for information will stop.

I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here.

I should mention that the Tandy 3000, an 8mhz AT clone, is sold by a number of
non-Radio Shack "official Tandy distributors" at very very aggressive
proces well below the already aggressive Tandy list price. As an example,
Computers Plus in Littleton MA was quoting a price for the 20mb system in
the area of $2500-2600. Similarly for Perry Computers in Perry MI. This
price didn't include a monitor or monitor card, but you should be able to pick
up these on the aftermarket, if the price these stores offer is still too high.

I have a PC/AT myself, but if I was in the market today, I would definitely
consider the Tandy 3000 as a real possibility. The prices are as favorable
as the PC Limited unit, and, unlike PC Limited, you have a large corporation
standing behind the equipment. I have purchased other equipment from Computers
Plus with great satisfaction, though I have no direct experience with Perry
Computers.

 You may also want to check out the PC Design's rendition of the AT (10 mhZ;
designed for 12). List price : $2400. for single disk, 1 meg memory unit.
Reviewed in PC Week within the last three issues.

We have a PC Designs PC clone; very welll built. We have dealt with PConnection
extensively and believe it to be one of the best mail-order firms that we have
 purchased from in any field.

I have purchased the PC Limited AT clone and have been using it with
IBM PC XENIX for about six months now. My only complaint is that the
30MB drive I ordered with it came formatted as a 20MB, so until I can
get my hands on a formatting program, I'm stuck with a 10MB dead zone.
Also, there was NO i mean *NO* i mean **NO** documentation available
for it, except a ONE PAGE xerox'ed sheet of jumper settings. (This may
have changed since then).

Impressions:

the keyboard is not as nice as real IBM, but all in all as good
as or better than most clones or even most good Ascii
	terminals.

In six months, it has only 'hung' a few times, and I could
trace those to electrical glitches (turning on other stuff on
	the same circut).

Recommendations:

	I would do it again.

There may be some clones even cheaper now. Look into it.
