I saw in "Data Communications" magazine ads for real dial up (two-wire) 9600 bps modems. By real, I mean modems that maintain full 9600 baud in both directions without need for flow control or delay greater than that attributable to the carrier. (ATT's terrestrial service is rated at less than 100 mS coast to coast). These modems from Concord Data Systems look like the real thing because they use the V.32 standard. (V.32 uses echo cancellation to achieve its high data rate) Stuff like Telebit and UDS might be acceptable for terminal use but is not optimal for bulk data transfer. Has anyone used one of these yet? I must admit I didn't expect the technology to become commercially available so soon. -- "We must welcome the future, remembering that soon it will become the present, and respect the past, knowing that once it was all that was humanly possible."
