Open letter to anyone desiring to help me in my quest for a new career, I have both a B.S.E.E. and a M.S.E.E (Electronic Engineering) and have worked as an R&D engineer in the field of real-time visual systems for flight simulators, in hardware design, software development, algorithm development, and system integration areas for the past twenty years. However, I strongly desire a career change to an area of greater personal interest, and am thus seeking contacts and ideas relative to this end. I am very interested in applying my technical problem solving capabilities towards aiding humanity in its quest for a better life in a better world, a world in which people have learned the methodologies for developing and maintaining a strong mutual respect for all life and the preservation of our environment. In order to attain this end, I believe that the real problems need to be identified and attacked, rather than only the symptoms, as seem to be the case with modern day approaches. For example, problems such as drug abuse wouldn't exist if the demand for drugs was not present. The solution then, is not to try to legislate morality by focusing most of the effort on making drugs illegal, but to identify and treat the causes of drug dependancy in the first place. To this end, it appears to me that one of the major underlying causes of our problems is our inability to understand and deal with our basic emotional/behavioral mechanisms. Each individual's state of mind must become a topic of paramount importance and universal concern. Healthy minds help make for healthy bodies and a healthy world. I am most anxious to focus my problem solving abilities and efforts to this most noble research cause, of understanding the mechanisms operating within our thick human skulls, and to develop techniques for their quantification, and correction of deficiencies. Certainly, some means must exist for effeciently and accurately identifying, quantifying, and modifying our emotional reactions to life, so that all humans can firstly experience a full range of emotions and subsequently deal with them in a healthy manner. The intent of this approach is not to remove or manipulate individualism, but to provide the means for insuring that each individual is given the choice of being able to percieve life to the fullest extent of their naturally given potentials and to have available to then the tools to deal with them in turn. One possible avenue of approach could be utilizing music as a tool for aiding in the characterization and stimulation of human emotions. To this end, I would more than welcome any suggestions as to how and where I might become involved in research relating to the generation, perception, physiological, and psychological effects of music, or any other medium, with the underlying motivation being to develop an understanding and treatment methodology for our emotional/behavioral system.
