[net.news.group] new[s]group wars!!!

avi@pegasus.UUCP (02/07/84)

This is a followup to Rich Rosen (pyuxn!rlr), and his recent thoughts on
creating new newsgroups such as net.religion.jewish and subgroups of
net.music. Rich, among others, seems to feel that ANY new groups we create
are useless burdens on a well organized network. Although I sometimes feel
the same way, I strongly object to maintaining a static network.

I am one of the original supporters of the creation of net.religion.jewish.
It was not a spur of the moment decision. Many of us debated in private mail
about the various ways of satisfying the communications needs of some of us
on the net. We then had Dave Sherman write a draft proposal, and it was
critiqued by us several times before it was sent out. Dave has already
received many supportive letters. This is a newsgroup that has relatively
wide support. It is designed to contain discussions that have been proven to
have a place on the net, and which already are appearing in many newsgroups
-- including strange places like net.singles.

In comparison, many of the current groups were created when as few as five
people voted for it. Many have fallen into total silence, but it is just as
difficult to remove a group as it is to create it. Usenet is still an
anarchy. I agree that new groups should not be created peremptorily, but I
disagree with an attitude that says that NO new groups should be allowed.
Net.religion.jewish will be much more active than net.lang.mod2. If comments
continue to stay generally favorable, then I will create the group on
February 15, as we stated in our proposal. Comments are, of course, welcome.
Please post to the net, or mail to utcsrgv!dave or myself.

I agree with Avi on almost every point he made, with one minor exception.
It is MUCH easier to create a new topic than it is to delete an obsolete
one. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about on this one.

A good magician should always subscribe to the highest purposes, and
nothing should disuade him from these lofty goals, except, perhaps, that he
has to eat, and it is nice to put a little away for retirement.
