Carnegie Mellon recently announced the formation of an independant college of Computer Science which WILL offer graduate programs in Software Engineering. Nothing has been said about an undergraduate program but I'm crossing my fingers. Considering CMU's resources and the existence of the (controversial) Software Engineering Institute (SEI), I've no doubt that the program will be worth a look-see. Incidentally, Carnegie Mellon also offers (will offer) a PhD in Robotics. I'm hoping that the powers-that-be will come to realize that a diverse background (starting at the UNDERgraduate level) in both CS and Engineering is important. Right now, I have to choose between Elec/Comp Engineering and Computer Science, although it seems to me I get short-changed no matter which program I eventually choose. Currently, I work as research assistant in CMU's Robotics Institute and I have a pretty good idea of what I would like to do in the future... but I have no idea how I'm going to get the background. There aren't enough hours in the day to work, and pursue a double (triple?!?) major. Quote from a Robotics Engineer: "If it doesn't have a mouse and a keyboard, he's clueless" (of a Computer Scientist) Drew (ARPA: ak10+@andrew.cmu.edu) (Confused/Concerned UnderGrad) A good engineer must also be a good scientist, and good scientist must be good engineer. As for managers...
