[comp.software-eng] Config Mgt Tools: NSE, ParaView, ADT, CMT, ...

cliff@centaure.UUCP (Clifford Dibble) (03/17/89)

Our company has several large, on-going software projects and we're
looking for a "configuration/version control system" to help us manage
them. We're quickly outgrowing SCCS and shell scripts.

So far I've identified the following products and vendors:

1) NSE "Network Software Environment"

	Sun Microsystems
	Mountain View, CA.
	415-960-1300

2) "Aide-De-Camp"

Software Maintenance & Development Systems, Inc.
	Concord, MA.
	508-369-7398

3) "ParaView"

	Athena Systems
	Sunnyvale, CA.
	408-749-6820

4) "Software Backplane"

	Atherton Technology
	Sunnyvale, CA.
	408-734-9822

5) "CMT" Configuration Management Toolkit

	EXPERTWARE, Inc.
	Santa Clara, CA.
	408-746-0706

6) "ISTAR"

	Imperial Software Technology
	London England.
	(44) 1 581 8155

7) "GENOS"

	GEC Software Ltd.
	London England.
	(44) 1 240 7171

8) CCC	"Change and Configuration Control"

	Softool Corp.
	Goleta, CA.
	805-683-5777

9) "Amplify Control"

	CaseWare, Inc.
	Costa Mesa, CA.
	800-322-4294

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with
any of these products. If I collect enough information I'll post a
summary.

If there's enough interest out there, why not start a discussion about
the general topic of configuration management and version control?
Consider the complexity of today's software projects: many programming
teams developing code in several languages on multi-architecture
networks for products which will be ported to multiple targets,
different windowing systems, etc. Meanwhile, as development continues
and the products continue to evolve along many divergent paths, bug
fixes must be retroactively applied, regression tests performed,
manuals updated, etc.

Two weeks ago I posted a message to this news group inquiring about Sun
Microsystem's NSE "Network Software Environment". So far I've received
ten summary requests, one message from a soon-to-be NSE user, and only
one "lukewarm" review from an actual NSE user. I promise that once I
collect more responses I'll post an NSE summary.

P.S. I also posted last week's NSE message to comp.sys.sun (a moderated
group). The posting has yet to appear, but if it ever does, I expect
to hear from other NSE customers.

Thanks!
