I've just received PC/VI Version 1.01 from Custom Software Systems. The release also included a new manual. The manual is both twice the size of the original one I got back in November and has been greatly cleaned up and enhanced. The new version of the program has about 99% of the bugs fixed which I've seen documented here on the net, plus a number of other enhancements. One interested enhancement is that the .EXE file is 2KB smaller! CSS said that they made a number of optimizations to reduce the size of their data space requirement. Another interesting addition was the inclusion of a version of the program which was specifically compiled for the 80186 instruction set (this includes the NEC V20 and 80286). CSS makes no guarantees that this version will work, but I've used it and have yet to find a problem. Now if they only thing they had to do was recompile the program, why don't other software manufacturers do the same thing? If you have no idea what PC/VI is, it is a FULL (and I do mean full!) implementation of the UNIX VI under MS-DOS. It is available from: Custom Software Systems PO Box 551 MO Shrewsbury, MA 01545 617-842-1712 (Note: The latest letter I got from them said explicitly that you will probably only be able to reach them from 7-8:30AM and 8-11PM. However, you can leave a message on their answering machine and the DO return their phone calls.) Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with this company.
