I am currently evaluating IDE's software engineering tool called "Software Through Pictures" which runs on a Sun. I am interested in hearing other peoples thoughts about this package. If you have used this tools or have any comments regarding it's use please contact me. The current issue of Computer Language contains a favorable review of Software through Pictures. As I remember, it was desribed as the best CASE tool the author had seen, but still didn't do everything one might want, e.g., code generation. -- Dave Sill (dsill@relay.nswc.navy.mil)

While it is strictly true that IDE does not support code generation, it is easy enough to do from IDE. The form of the M-spec is template driven. The standard template can be replaced by one that is nearer to code generation. In fact IDE delivers this code generation template as part of their examples. There's a review of "Software Through Pictures" in the July 1989 issue of Computer Language. Basically, the reviewer was very impressed with it, however "much work remains to support the latter stages of the life cycle. Specifically, code generation and prototyping facilities are weak, and [it] lacks reverse-engineering capacity and configuration management capabilities." Computer Language has been covering the CASE area pretty well, and Warren Keuffel (the reviewer) will be reviewing more CASE tools in the future and you can talk to him on the CLMForum of CompuServe. --- Ted ----
