If you need an example of some theory, Gerard Baudet's PhD thesis was on the
Design of Algorithms for an Asynchronous Multiprocessor.  It was a CMU
technical report 1978, very hard to find.  Neither the author has extra
copies, nor does UMI have it on fiche.  He condensed the thesis for an
ACM article (it was Jour. ACM April 1978).  By chance I ran into
a member of his thesis committee 2 years after I did a survey on
multiprocessing (David Stevenson then at Zilog, now at H-P).  His
topic was asynchronous chaotic relaxation techniques for solving
systems of linear equations.  His system was truly asynchronous,
not like an OS running on a uniprocessor.
