I asked the same question when the LJ was introduced. What I heard was:
* The Canon LBP-CX print engine (as used in the LJ and other printers) is a
reversal processor - where light (the laser) hits the imager, it will be
dark (take toner) on the printed page.
* The copiers are positive processors - where light (reflected from the
original document) hits the imager, it will remain light (no toner) on the
printed page.
* If you could install a copier cartridge in the LBP-CX, the pages would
have white print on a black background. Canon, in their infinite wisdom,
made the cartridges mechanically different to prevent this.
