Smalltalk running in an XWindow Although ParcPlace have provided a way to run smalltalk in a sunView window on a Sun workstation we have a problem. It looks likely that our future research prototypes will have to be demonstated in an XWindows environment. Can any vendor provide us with a Smalltalk which will run in an XWindows environment, as a window, on a Sun? If not what development practices would people suggest. Our experience with Smalltalk has been very positive. We have no wish to move away from our practice of developing software engineering tools using Smalltalk, but if we can't deliver the results ? I am aware of attempts which have been made to automatically translate Smalltalk source into Objective-C, but I find it hard to believe that graphical tools writen in smalltalk are easy to translate in Objective-C with the corresponding X libaries (even by hand). If there is a response I will summarize to the net Thanks in advance. From what I've heard, if you get Sun's X11/NeWS product, you'll be able to run Smalltalk in an X window. Apparently, X11/NeWS has a sunView emulation mode that translates the calls into X. I can't say much more as I (still) haven't received my copy of X11/NeWS. Paul Verket verket@venice.sedd.trw.com
