SOUTH AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN COMPUTER STUDIES School of Mathematics and Computer Studies The Levels Campus Applications are invited for the above positions which are available on a contract basis of up to 3 years in the first instance. The discipline of Computer Studies contributes significantly to teaching and research in the information technologies. Teaching activities include the provision of highly regarded professionally-oriented computing courses from associate diploma to graduate diploma level, as well as introductory computing subjects in other academic areas. Research is focused primarily in the areas of software productivity tools, human-computer interaction and manufacturing support. Increasing interaction with industry, consultancy. There is a wide range of computing facilities including DEC VAX (VMS), a large UNIX facility, Apple MAC, PC-compatible and SUN workstations, together with extensive networking. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have postgraduate qualifications and preferably relevant experience in computer science, information systems or computer systems engineering. Preference will be given to applicants with goodbackgrounds in software engineering or computer systems engineering, but applicants with a background in other aspects of computing also may apply. Additional remuneration may be possible following announcement of a $1million cooperative venture to be launched within the next 3 months. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ SOUTH AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY LECTURERS IN COMPUTER STUDIES School of Mathematics and Computer Studies The Levels Campus SOUTH AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN COMPUTER STUDIES SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER STUDIES LEVELS CAMPUS THE SCHOOL The School comprises a total of 36.5 full-time academic staff and is responsible for teaching degree and associate diploma courses in computer studies, mathematics and computer systems engineering (jointly with the School of Electronic Engineering), graduate diplomas in systems analysis and mathematics teaching. Several students are undertaking masters degrees by research. The discipline of Computer Studies contributes significantly to teaching and research in the information technologies. The Computer Studies staff include one Professor, 4 senior lecturers, nine lecturers and 3 tutors. Teaching activities include the provision of highly regarded professionally- oriented computing courses from associate diploma to graduate diploma level to over 700 students, as well as introductory computing subjects in other academic areas. Research is focussed primarily in the areas of software productivity tools, human-computer interaction and manufacturing support. Increasing interaction with industry, provides excellent opportunities for collaborative research and consultancy. There is a wide range of computing facilities including DEC VAX(VMS), a large UNIX facility, Apple MAC, PC-compatible and SUN workstations, together with extensive networking. A major new cooperative venture based on a commitment of $1million from an industrial partner is expected to be announced during the next quarter. This will provide opportunities for significant enhancement of the range of activities undertaken and also of the remuneration packages of staff involved. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES A senior lecturer will exhibit expertise, and show capacity for academic leadership, in an appropriate area of computing, preferably in software engineering or computer systems engineering. Undertake teaching, including assessment of students, in an appropriate range of computing subjects within the teaching responsibilities of the Computer Studies discipline. The subjects will be predominantly a subset from the degree programmes in Computer Studies and Computer Systems Engineering and the Graduate Diploma in Systems Analysis. Teach one or two advanced topics, at third or fourth year level, in the area of specialisation. Actively participate in research and/or consulting activities that will enhance the professional reputation of the incumbent and the Institute. The incumbent will be encouraged to participate in professional society and other professional activities which are appropriate for a computer studies academic. SELECTION CRITERIA 1. Capacity for Academic Leadership Relevant (higher) degree in computer science, computer systems engineering or information systems (an applicant without a higher degree would need to provide other strong evidence of research capacity). Publications or other clear evidence of demonstrable ability to undertake, and supervise students in, research projects. Ability to contribute significantly to the development of new courses in computer studies or computer systems engineering. 2. People Skills Ability to teach students at multiple levels of higher education. A constructively critical attitude to assessment of student work. Good communication skills (in English) in both the written and spoken modes in relation to peers, the profession and students. The ability to get on with people and contribute to the success of a team. 3. Personal Attributes Must be eligible for professional membership of the Australian Computer Society. Relevant teaching experience in a higher education institution is highly desirable. Must display initiative and self-confidence and show evidence of capacity to handle responsibility. Ability to work at several tasks concurrently to declared deadlines. Display a highly professional attitude to fulfil the duties of an academic.
