I have only received two replies re my posting about Language Transformation Toolkits. They are both included, almost completely, below. Tom Wetmore, one of the responders, also posted an interesting message to comp.compilers recently. I think the Cornell Synthesizor Generator (from Cornell U, USA) and the Mentor system (from INRIA, France) are also appropriate. (Can anyone who is a recent user of either system care to comment?) The Advanced Software Products Group of AT&T Bell Laboratories markets a tool that matches your description almost exactly. The tool is called MetaTool(tm) Specification-Driven Tool Builder. In fact, MetaTool (as I will call it) goes beyond your description. MetaTool takes a description of a translator and then generates it. The description is in two parts: a source description that uses a grammatical model to describe what the ultimate translator will read as input; and a product(s) description that uses a template model to describe what the translator will translate the input into. From these descriptions MetaTool automatically builds the translator. MetaTool runs on UNIX only. It generates a YACC file, a LEX file, lots of standard C files, and one C file for each product the new translator is to produce. MetaTool also generates the MAKEFILE that builds the translator from all the generated source code, and it also invokes the MAKEFILE to build it. It is in fact a pretty magical tool.
