                     Call for Projects for the

SECOND WORKSHOP ON THE NEXT GENERATION OF CASE-TOOLS

The Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim and the University of
Jyvaskyla, Finland are organizing the Second Workshop on the Next Generation
of CASE-tools. The goal of the workshop is to present and discuss research
results and ideas in this changing field of CASE research.

The special focus of the workshop is to address the following issues:
- new innovations on tools
- integration of tools and methods in CASE environments
- CASE shells
- CASE and CSCW
- representation techniques and representation of design and process
  knowledge, metamodelling

The first workshop in this series was held in Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands,
and was sponsored by SERC (Software Engineering Research Centre), Utrecht,
in spring 1990. It gathered 25 researchers who were actively involved in
research projects on CASE-tools. The second workshop will be held in connection
with CAiSE 91, the third Nordic Conference on Advanced Information Systems
Engineering in Trondheim, that takes place from 13 to 15 May 1991.

Attendance will be strictly by invitation, and the number of attendees is
limited to approximately 25 persons. The groups invited should consist of
2 or 3 researchers per project. However, in order to maximize the number
of groups in the workshop, we would prefer to have no more than three
researchers from one affiliation.

The workshop will be held at the Norwegian Institute of Technology,
Trondheim, Norway Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of May

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Global Program

The workshop is arranged immediately before CAiSE*91, the 3rd Nordic
conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering. We encourage
the workshop participants to participate in the conference as well.
The CAiSE conference shall begin at noon on 13th of May and finish by
noon on the 15th.

For more information on the CAiSE*91 conference, please contact:
Rudolf Andersen
Information Systems Group
Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

(rudolf@idt.unit.no).

The workshop is scheduled as follows:

Evening May 10th: Arrival of participants and informal welcome.
May 11th and 12th: Group presentations and discussions
May 13th: Morning free, 1st day of CAiSE*91 conference

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Set-up

The set-up of this series of workshops is motivated by the lack of
intensive exchange of ideas and discussions in this challenging field
at international conferences. The participants experienced the first
event in this workshop series a great success due to the extensive informal
and formal discussions on various state-of-the-art issues. The groups that
will be invited should be involved in projects focusing on the next
generation of CASE-tools to assure a common research orientation. The
limited number of attendees is aimed to stimulate an intensive exchange
of results and ideas.

The workshop is designed for research groups instead of individual researchers
in order to avoid a typical "paper parade" type of conference. We aim for a
more free atmosphere, in which broad topics and ideas could be freely discussed
between different research groups.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Project presentations

Each group is expected to give two presentations: a shorter one (half an hour)
which outlines the scope, the goals, the research environment, the tool
architecture and an overview of the results so far; and a larger one
(two hours) in which the the group presents the results, ideas and experience
in a detailed way. Each group is also expected to review the material of one
other group and serve as a discussant for their presentations.

Sufficient time for discussions will be scheduled. Demonstrations of tools
are possible.

Beside the group presentations additional theme discussions and panels will be
scheduled on topics, that are of interest for all projects.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Workshop participation

Any research group interested in participating in this workshop should send
a letter of intention to the secretary of the Workshop Committee. The letter
should be no more than three pages long and include a description of the
research project, the names of the prospective participants, and a list of
obtained and planned results. The attendance of the project leaders
or senior researchers is highly recommended. The Workshop committee will
select the projects for participation and send notifications at the end
of January 1991. Participants are encouraged to combine the workshop with
the CAiSE*91 conference.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Workshop papers

Each group has the obligation to submit some papers on camera-ready format
before March 15th 1991. This may be any material, provided the authors have
the copyright. It may be already published or submitted. It may be raw material
or sketches. This material will be published in the workshop proceedings,
that will be sent to the participants in April 1991. The copyright of the
papers is retained by the authors, so the papers may be submitted elsewhere.
The workshop is aimed to give feedback of the papers to improve their quality.
