Network Management Design at Telecom Australia is currently evaluating
network management development platforms with a view to a number of
large scale software development projects. Our evaluation is based
on the OSI-network management/NM Forum/CCITT standards and documents.
We are aware of products from AT&T, IBM, HP, DEC, NCR, Data General
and Ericsson and will be considering these over the next year.
We would be very interested in hearing about experiences/opinions
(good and bad) of other people/groups developing network management
applications utilising some software development platform.
Organisations developing network management platforms are also invited
to comment. Of course, we hope that the replies are objective and
concerned with the technical merits/limitations of the platform.
The replies could include general areas such as:-
communications, protocols
development languages/tools
methodologies/prototyping
databases, expert systems
user interfaces
stated/implied vendor directions
'real' systems
Network management is rapidly growing in interest and vendors are now
attempting to provide products conforming with the various standards
bodies. There are a number of maturing products in this area and it
seems that reasonable discussion is possible. If there is sufficient
interest, I will summarise.
