[comp.software-eng] Literature - - Software testing

glenn8@odie.cs.mun.ca (Glenn Stowe) (05/25/91)

A few days ago I posted an article regarding software testing systems. It
didn't seem to generate much response, so let me bounce this off the net.

Does anybody have a list of relevent literature that is more recent that the
generic stuff found in the typical library? Most of my sources are circa 1978.
This topic has a lot of relevance in today's world and most of the writing
that is being done in the area is being buried in tomes of Software Engineering
text.

Please pass on to me any other replies that you get, I am also interested.
I have published several articles in conference proceedings on the subject:

I found the book "The Complete Guide to Software Testing" by Bill Hetzel to be
excellent. Mr. Hetzel has obviously been in the trenches for many years in the
test arena, and his book is full of his hard-earned experiences. Highly
recommended.

I recommend the new (1990) edition of Boris Beizer's
_Software_Testing_Techniques_, Van Nostrand Reinhold,
ISBN 0-442-20672-0. Includes a 37-page annotated bibliography of
testing references, with dates up to 1988 or so.

Commercial information is available from Software Quality Engineering. The
document is called: Testing Tools Reference Guide. It is a copyrighted
document that lists many test tools and their characteristics. SQE can be
reached at 3000-2 Hartley Road, Jacksonville, FL, 32257,

interest are published in IEEE Software and other periodicals. I am in the
commercial application area, not academics. Most aritcles are published by
academics, and while they are very interesting, I cannot apply the techniques
they describe on my budget and time-table. IEEE is trying to get more
publications from people in industry. So, if you get some good feedback, please
post a summary.

I have this Guide. It covers a broad range of tools. It is essentially a
catalog, not a book to read with the intention of learning more about testing
techniques etc.

I thought that was what was being asked for....

The document is a catalog of tools.....

Read Myers on the art of software testing...
Beizer's books on Software testing and system testing...
Read Mill's on Cleanroom techniques....
Gilb's or Fagan's papers and courses on inspection techniques....
IEEE compendia on Requirements Engineering...
Use the IEEE specs to get the outlines of the documents right,
or to ask the right questions during inspections....

Just a couple of thots.
