[comp.software-eng] IEE Books - a summary

sassam@dev.sas.com (Sue McGrath) (06/28/91)

My original request:

I got a catalog from IEE (not IEEE) that has an interesting book
available. It is Software Engineering for Technical Managers by
R.J. Mitchell. It is part of the IEE Management of Technology
Series. Has anyone heard of IEE or this series of books? Would
you recommend it? Thanks.

The responses:

I haven't actually read this book but I have read or seen others in this
series (in fact I just bought one recently) and they are generally
excellent and written by experienced authors.

The IEE is the Institution of Electrical Engineers (the British 'equivalent'
of your IEEE). It is a chartered engineering institution covering electrical,
electronic and software engineering.

HI Sue,

I just called the IEEE number you gave me; here's what I found out:

IEE stands for Institute of Electrical Engineers, it's a sister
society of the IEEE. They have a publication called the Software
Engineering Journal, which costs ~ $182.00 per year. Their address
is IEE, Michael Faraday House, Six Hills Way, Stevenage Herts, England,
   SG1 2AY.

I'm going to write for more info. Would you like me to pass along what
I learn?

IEE is the Institution of Electrical Engineers in the UK. It dates from the
time of Faraday, and has had most of the greatest UK electrical engineers in
its membership. It is now the professional society which regulates and
informs the UK electrical engineering profession, and one of two for
software engineers - the other is the British Computer Society (BCS).

I don't know the book.

The IEE is the Institution (not Institute) of Electrical Engineers,
the British professional association similar to the IEEE (but I
suspect that it pre-dates the American institution). It also has many
overseas members, such as me here in Australia. However, I was not
aware of that particular series of books. I subscribe to the IEE
`Software Engineering Journal', in which I have seen adverts for books
in the IEE Computing series, but not that series or that book,
somewhat surprisingly. Of course, I may have just missed them. Sorry I
cannot help!
