[comp.lang.postscript] Controlling LaserPrep versions via LW pwd

newbery@rata.vuw.ac.nz (Michael Newbery) (06/29/88)

The situation:
We have a LW IINTX that is available as a public printer on AppleTalk.
People come and use publicly accessible Macs to print. These Macs do not
have hard disks. People therefore tend to bring along their own System disks
(although we do make System disks available for anyone who needs them).
Consequently, people have a range of versions of the LW drivers---we
only just get everybody using one version when a new one comes along.

When faced with the dialog asking if they want to reload the drivers,
they always do! Thus trashing memory resident fonts, wasting time,
and confusing the *next* user (with the correct driver!).

We propose the following solution:
We will give the LW a password (possibly the LW driver version in BCD),
modify the POST resources in "LaserWriter" to use the new password for
exitserver and distribute this as the driver for those who think they have
to have their own copy. When we install a new version, we change the LW
password and lo! old versions no longer work---forcing people to get
the updates.

Question: will this work or have I overlooked something terribly obvious?
Has anyone out there done this? Anyone got any better ideas?

Please reply by e-mail, don't post. I'll summarise to the net if interest
warrants it.
