The following just whizzed by on the BBN bboard:
Some of you may know that QMS (the manufacturer of most of the
larger laser printers around BBN) recently acquired Imagen (another
laser printer manufacturer). Consequently they are trying to
convince us to buy some Imagen printers. Imagen printers have a lot
of nice features... However instead of using the standard, Adobe,
implementation of the Postscript language they implement a
Postscript clone, called Ultrascript...
Therefore we are trying to collect samples of Postscript output to
use as test cases. ...
Three things:
a) Anyone have any opinions on the Imagen engines?
b) Can anyone tell me something about "Ultrascript"?
c) if you have any "favorite" PostScript torture programs, I wouldn't mind
seeing them! (I have a couple of graphics hacks that eat up about
twenty minutes of printer-CPU-time to print...it'll be interesting
to see if the Imagen does them faster/slower/notatall.
Thanks

The Imagen "engines" are pretty much the same ones used by other laser printer makers. (Canon, etc.) Of course, they have to add their own controllers. I've bought six or seven Imagens over the years and have had very good luck with their hardware. I think they do a good job. I don't know anything about their Postscript clone software. We use their Impress models. But I would not worry about their hardware quality.
