[comp.lang.postscript] tpscript help

fiasco@amdahl.uts.amdahl.com (Richard Gircy) (11/13/88)

I've just installed Stephen Frede's TPSCRIPT troff to postcript
filter on my machine and I'm having a few problems.

When I filter a simple troff file, tpscript complains about unknown
fonts (S1 and GR) and the resulting postcript translation file contains
non-ascii characters (and this I assume is bad).

I edited out the non-ascii chars and just for fun sent it down to
my laser printer. The results fall fall short of representing the
correct output.

However, in general the postcript file looks pretty good and I suspect
that perhaps I'm missing some subtle setup or invocation parameter.
I'd love too here from anyone who has the slightest idea of what might
be wrong and perhaps we might be able to improve the startup
documentation in a way so that the less than guru-capable users
(like myself) can use this package.

Thanks in advance, rich.

For the most part I think I've answered my own questions, but the
answers are not pleasing.

I neglected to compile the font description files and was using the
aps files instead. No wonder nothing worked. However, upon looking
for makedev, I discovered my version of the dbw package (2.0) does
not have it (but ironically enough, the release letter brags about
including font description source to help you develop your own
device support -- big deal).

It really looks like I can you this package if only I could compile
the fonts. Any suggestions? Any hope?

Thanks in advance, rich.

Do you mean makedev was not include in DWB 2.0?
At our site it was in cmd/text/roff.d/troff.d/makedev.c
and it even works!

Duane Hesser posted a makedev replacement called mkfont to
comp.sources.misc (Vol 2, Issue 84) which should do what you want.
Even so, I don't see how tpscript could produce non-ascii output.
If you find that you can't get it to work at all, send me a small sample
file of ditroff output and I'll try it here.

Typically you get this error messages when running troff without the
"-Txxx" option (for example "-Talw when working with an Apple
LaserWriter). When omitting "-Txxx", ditroff assumes to produce
output for an Autologic idonotknowwhatnumber typesetter (== "-Taps"
which is default).

You have to have the font descriptions for your PostScript printer
(generated by makedev) installed in /usr/lib/font/devxxx to make
ditroff rum properly with the -Txxx option.

I hope this will help you solving your problems,

Andy

Not only are my problems solved, but I'm routinely munging 1/2 meg of
troff source thru tpscript. No so much as a burp. My congrats to Steve
for a job wellllll done.
