[ I read these on Nov 28 issue of Digital News ] QMS recently unveiled a PostScript Interpeter called UltraScript PC. It is a software interpretor that runs on a PC and output postscript to any non-postscript printers including the Epson LQ series, IBM Proprinter X24 and XL24 series, and other 24-pin dot-matrix printers that emulate them; HP's DeskJet and LaserJet Series I & II; and other true HP PCL compatible printers. Prices: $195 (25 typefaces), $495 (47 typefaces) This function is exactly what we need. We don't want to throw away all our existing raster printers. We can use them for proofing device. Virtually everyone can turn their existing printer to postscript compatible. The problem is that we are on unix! Could anyone on the net summarize what unix software (product or public domain) can be used to output postscript files to an non-postscript printer. Please don't start the discussion on host-based vs. on-board postscript again. I don't care how slow it would be. I am only interested in what is available. Thank you in advance. Please e-mail to me any info you have on this topic. If you have a summary, post it. -- .signature under construction ... {cbosgd,fortune,hplabs,seismo!ihnp4,ucbvax!hpda}!nsc!daisy!cplai C.P. Prices: $195 (25 typefaces), $495 >(47 typefaces) I have been too busy to describe this product fully, so I haven't sent anything. It is a DOS TSR that uses protected mode, extended memory and demand paging technology to support printing PostScript files from inside an application or at DOS level. The package emphasizes "user friendliness" and transparent "seaming" into an applications environment such as Windows. Arguments about software vs. hardware RIPs apply; QMS still sells a LOT of different hardware RIPs. This product is aimed at users who: - can't afford existing PostScript compatible solutions - can't justify them, since they only print a few pages a day - don't have laser printers The product will be sold through The Laser Connection. Call them for details. >The problem is that we are on unix! Maybe some future product. - Geof
