For those not familiar with Jeff Berlin, he's played bass with Bill Bruford's band "Bruford", and on occasion, with Alan Holdsworth, and other assorted people. Jeff has recently come out with a solo album called "Jeff Berlin & vox humana - Champion". Vox humana is the name of his backup band. At any rate, if you're into fusion, this is good stuff! The main musicians on the album are, Jeff on bass, T. Lavits on keys (used to be with the Dregs), Scott Henderson on guit (an incredible GIT graduate), and Steve Smith on drums (from Journey). One might think, 'what is Steve Smith doing in a fusion band', but he used to play with Jean Luc Ponty before he joined Journey, and he's quite a drummer. His work here is really good. Also, on a few track, are guest musicians that you may recognize. Neal Schon (Journey) does some shredding guitar on a track or two, and Clare Fischer does some really cool keyboard work. To top it off, Jeff has gotten one of the most incredible drummers around to sit in on a couple of tracks - it's the first time (to my knowledge) this drummer has done anything outside of his band (excluding something he and has band did on someone elses album). I am referring to Neal Peart, of RUSH. Neal plays on the title track of the album, and shreds on it. He does incredible double bass drum licks throught the whole song - no doubt the reason why Jeff got him on the album. So.... If you're into some good fusion, definitely check this one out.... "...One likes to believe in the freedom of music. But glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity..." -Neal Peart (RUSH: from "The Spirit of Radio"). -- * Isaac Salzman (Gumby) * UUCP: ...{ttidca,psivax}!rdlvax!salzman * ARPA: ttidca!rdlvax!salzman@Rand-unix.arpa
