[net.micro] Trojan horses and PD software

BRAND@SUMEX-AIM.arpa (Tony Brand) (05/17/86)

A lot of CP/M software came with CRC codes so that one could check file
integrity after modem transfer. Also an old copy protection scheme was
to have a program do a CRC check on itself after being loaded.

If PD software developers included these 2 schemes as standards we could be a
little more secure that we were getting legitimate copies of these often
outstanding (e.g. ARC512) programs.

I guess we've forgotten about CRC checks now that modem comm
programs are better!

Not everybody has...all OS-9 modules have a checksum. For that matter,
S-record format includes checksums. I once proposed S-record instead of
uuencode/BinHex for executables for that reason, but the proposal seems
to have fizzled out.
