[net.micro] Data General One

chamoun@lownlab.UUCP (Nassib Chamoun) (05/31/86)

I am considering the purchase of a Data General One (model 2), with a 10 MB
winchester and an electroluminescent screen. Delivery should be in about 6
weeks. This system is supposed to be fully compatible with the IBM PC, and
will be running MS-DOS. The primary application will be word processing, with
a little bit of spreadsheet and database management thrown in.

--Does anybody have any experience with the Data General One? Comments
regarding the actual extent of PC-compatibility would be especially useful.
How about hardware/software problems? (The screen on the model 2 seems to be
a great improvement over the liquid crystal version on model 1).

--I am looking for a c_compiler to use for program development. Does anybody
know of one which permits system calls, ioctl, forks or vforks?

--The system comes bundled with a word processing package called "CEO Write".
The individual who will be the primary user of the system is something of a
computer-phobe, and would prefer something very user friendly. Is this a good
package for him (or does anybody know of anything better for this purpose?).
A fast-running spell program would be a very nice feature.

Thanks.
