[net.micro] origin of name BASIC

rupp@noscvax.UUCP (William L. Rupp) (06/04/86)

Most people are aware of the acronym associated with the name
of the BASIC language, to wit; Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction
Code (I think I got that right).

Usually it is assumed that this name was invented
by the writers of the language at Dartmouth. Somewhere in the dim recesses
of my mind I seem to recall reading something to the effect that this acronym
was thought up by somebody else long after the fact. Can anyone
shed some light on this?

(I know, it's probably common knowledge and I'm the only one who is ignorant.
Still, I would appreciate any information.)
