[comp.lang.postscript] Looking for PostScript Printers

bsmart@vrdxhq.verdix.com (Bob Smart) (04/29/89)

Our company is considering going to PostScript laser printers.
I know very little about these devices but have been assigned
the task of collecting information and making recommendations
as to what we should consider. We are primarily a Unix shop,
although we do have VMS machines that we support our product
on. We have a mix of Suns, a Sequent Balance 8000, some Vaxen
running 4.3 BSD, and some odd balls such as a Prime EXL and a
HP 9000. Everything is connected via Ethernet. Right now we use
some Imagen printers that are getting old. Most of our staff
is comfortable with the usual Unix text tools ( nroff, tbl, etc)
We currently have Interleaf software and are considering FRAME.
I am looking for information right now. My questions are:

1) What experiences have people had with PostScript printers.
How long does it take to get a 3 page document out? If I print
several documents back to back does the next document begin
entering the printer for formatting before the previous job
finishes leaving the print engine? How many pages per minutes
do you really get out of your printer?

2) How long did it take to get postscript working on your system?
How much training, etc. did it take to make people productive again?

3) What are some good PostScript printers and what should I look
for in the printers? Are there add on packages available for generic
laser printers that would be effective?

Any help would be appreciated. I am willing to talk to any vendors
that see this as well as listen to the collective net wisdom. I will
be glad to summarize everything and keep people posted on my progress.

Thanks,
Bob Smart (bsmart@verdix.com)
