After some initial problems with creating the group, it seems to be doing well. Over twenty articles have arrived at my machine, and they cover an interesting array of topics that range from Kosher food to naming your kids and ways of dealing with mixed marriages. One good side effect is that some Holmdel NJ machines are converting to news version 2.10. Because they were running 2.9, they seem to have absorbed my create messages and not passed it on to 2.10 machines elsewhere. This led to a small clan of machines that had net.religion.j, instead of the longer name. I have convinced the management to upgrade, now that I can prove there is a real need. I had to get Paul Lustgarten to issue a create for the rest of the world. he also came up with a timely suggestion, and I now send locally generated articles to ihnp4, so it gets to others in finite time. I have received little flack (yet) about the group. The major complaint was that "notes" can not deal with long newsgroup names. As was mentioned in the original charter, that is their problem. Anyone who wishes to participate on the net should try to upgrade their software to provide adequate functionality. It may be wise to weed out some of the older versions of news -- since they tend to cause more than their share of problems for the community, and make newer releases of the software more complicated and slow because they have to maintain compatibility. Enough said. -- -=> Avi E. Gross @ AT&T Information Systems Laboratories (201) 576-6241 suggested paths: [ihnp4, allegra, cbosg, hogpc, ...]!pegasus!avi
