[net.micro] Request for help: Visual "Commuter" computer memory upgrade

dukelow@noscvax.UUCP (Robert A. Dukelow) (06/09/86)

I recently bought a Visual "Commuter" computer from DAK. It is software
compatible with the IBM/PC - but not hardware. As an aside, I am well
satisfied with DAK. The problem is that I bought the 256K version but
would now like to upgrade to 512K. The operations manual has very
little technical info - but does provide the DIP switch settings for
various memory configurations. There is one row of populated 256K
memory with an empty row of sockets next to it.

I installed the additional memory and changed the switch settings. The
ROM diagnostics now indicate 512K, but the memory diagnostics fail
(reads FF for all locations above 256K as far as I can tell).

I would appreciate any suggestions. The operations manual doesn't
actually say what is required to upgrade the memory (it is assumed that
you send it back to Visual for upgrades) - but I couldn't find any
obvious jumpers or sockets that looked like they could be related to
memory configuration. Anybody know if Visual is even still alive? The
telephone operator didn't have a listing for the city listed in the
manual. I haven't tried going back through DAK yet.
