I'd forgotten that the Encoding vector is used for keying into the font cache. Sigh. Well, at least now it's not so mysterious. On a related note, does anyone know what kinds of changes have been made in recent versions of PostScript in order to handle fonts with more than 256 characters (NEC's new Kanji PostScript printer, for example)? -- Amanda Walker <amanda@intercon.UUCP> -- "Some of the worst mistakes in history have resulted from trying to apply methods that work fine in one field to another where they don't." -James Hogan

Probably the most complete information is in Adobe's composite font documentation. I think it is available from Adobe's file server (adobe! ps-file-server). Send it a message with a subject of "help" for help. -- Steve Winters (winters@apple.com) These thoughts are my own; I do not speak for Apple.
