The education department of Sun Microsystems offers a number of courses of interest to SunOS programmers which are taught periodically at several locations in the U.S. and abroad. The following information describes one of the offerings of relevance to the readers of this newsgroup. Dedicated classes at a Sun training center and classes at your facility are also available. Those wishing to take classes outside the U.S. should contact their local Sun field office. Sun employees should not use the above number either but should use internal email instead. ===================================================================== NeWS Programming SG-260 Overview: This entry-level class teaches programmers how to develop graphical user interfaces for a distributed-computing environment using the Network extensible Window System (NeWS(TM)). A ground-up approach is taken starting with PostScript(R), progressing to NeWS extensions, and ending with the C-to-PostScript interface. Prerequisites: Before attending this course, students should be able to: * Demonstrate at least two years of programming experience in languages such as C or Pascal * Understand the concept and use of pointers and structures * Use basic SunOS commands * Use the SunView user interface described in SunView 1 Beginner's Guide (Sun part number 800-1706) * Create and edit textfiles using one of the editors, vi or TextEditor. Duration: Five days Objectives: Upon completing this course, students should be able to: * Have a general overview of how NeWS compares to other window systems * Demonstrate PostScript programming, including stack manipulation, path construction, painting, and coordinate transformation * Use NeWS extensions to build canvases, create processes, and handle events * Understand NeWS object-oriented programming and its implementation * Use the Lite toolkits for windows, menus, and items * Use the C-to-PostScript preprocessor to connect client processes to NeWS.
