I want to start an experimental project to send and receive news as PostScript files, rather than just as ASCII text. This has been brought up before, but it requires equipment that not everybody has, so it's not appropriate for the comp.lang.postscript group. What I would like to do is to figure out some basic functionality and explore some ideas about what should get transmitted and how it should be read (and perhaps generated). Hopefully we could save space and the transmission of bytes by having a common prologue that is posted every so often but not with every message, but that would only be possible if there were some standardized way of creating the PS messages. Anyway, if you're interested in a project like this, send me some mail, and I'll build a mailing list initially, rather than having the discussion go on in comp.lang.postscript. Also, please indicate in your mail if your site receives the "alt.*" newsgroups. It might be possible to create an "alternative" newsgroup to test this stuff out when/if we come up with something promising. Let's generate some ideas and maybe even write some software, and see what we can come up with. As a basic requirement, at least for the beginning stages, you'll need the ability to execute PostScript files on your display. This is going to be something that I do late at night, basically, so it won't be an official project in any capacity, but I think that some pretty neat stuff could be done, and I'd like to collaborate with some of you folks out there.
