Just got a new IIID (that's right THREE-D) and have some comments/questions. First, make sure you have >= 4MB of memory if you plan to run duplex mode. The Postscript software will notify you (via front panel LCD display) is you do not have at least 2MB. However, if you have 3MB, everything works fine until you attempt duplex mode in which case the PS software pukes back a rangeerror for the setduplexmode command. Now, if your driver software doesn't annunciate returned error codes, you will have a difficult time determining the problem. Second, playing with PS executive-mode revealed some things I don't understand. PS manuals state the "eerom" entry is supposed to return "true" unless the printer's ROM is determined to have an "inconsistancy", in which case it dumps the ROM contents on the stack (this is statusdict by the way). The HP always dumps the ROM on the stack (is my ROM inconsistant??). Further, a "<index> eescratch" command returns an "unregistered" error which the PS manual specifically states should never happen! Dumping part of statusdict reveals the eescratch entry to be present. Finally, the software being distributed currently for the MAC has a IID and III driver, but no IIID driver. Using the either is a disaster. All of my old Microsoft programs simply abort when printing. Other programs behave strangely. The standard LaserWriter driver works fine but you don't get the opportunity to select IIID features. ARE YOU LISTENING HP. ANY COMMENTS. -- Kent S.
