[comp.lang.postscript] Music Notation Symbols

carr%car.utah.edu@cs.utah.edu (Harold Carr) (09/26/90)

Does anybody have any PostScript fonts or routines for making music
notation symbols (e.g., quarter notes, rests, bar lines, repeats, etc)?

Thanks,
Harold

There may be some PD ones, but by far the best I've seen is "Sonata"
from Adobe. It's gorgeous, and pretty inexpensive as Adobe fonts go
(since it's not an entire typeface family).

Adobe has Sonata, which has all the possible pieces of musical notation
you could ever want, carefully organized so that they all work together
in a reasonable manner. PC Connection, in Marlow NH (800) 243-8088 carries
Adobe fonts for PCs at good discounts*.

Adobe published a document on Sonata and some of its design considerations
in Postscript format on Compuserve in the Adobe forum. If you can't get
to that, let me know and I'll e-mail it to you.

You can also get a musical notation font for free with Andrea
Steinbach's MuTeX. MuTeX is a set of TeX language macros and metafont
language fonts for typesetting music. You can create bitmap
postscript from these using metafont and dvips. Several anonymous ftp
sites carry mutex:

wuarchive.wustl.edu:/mirrors/msdos/tex/mutex.arc
