[comp.lang.postscript] Postscript Interpreters

jmd@ee.umr.edu (Jim Dumser) (08/30/90)

I'm sure this has been asked before, but didn't pay any attention to the
answer. I'm looking for Postscript interpreters for an AT clone with
Hercules graphics, with either screen preview or dot matrix printer output,
or both. I've got Ghostscript (1.3), but that only supports EGA, and I'd
like to try to avoid major hacking if I can.

I'm mainly interested in it as a learning tool and to preview stuff before I
try printing it on a laser printer (I don't own one; I have access to a
printer on campus).

Of course, I'd prefer shareware to commercial, but I'd like input as to all
alternatives (GS may be the only shareware product). Especially for
shareware products, please include where it can be obtained (by ftp, if
possible). I'm looking specifically for something that will work with
Hercules graphics &/or a dot matrix printer (Okidata ML 182, 9 pin), but
feel free to mention any product, even if I have to write the output code
myself.

Please respond by e-mail. I'll summarize to the net.

I am looking for a software package that interprets Postscript for PCs. I
have heard of two such packages : Ultrascript and Freedom of Press. What I
want to know is which of the two is better in terms of output quality and
compatibility. Any comments would be grateful. Also suggestions for other
pieces of software would be helpful.

(P.S. The software should be able to output to a variety of printers, e.g.
      lasers, dot matrix etc.)

Thanks.
